Project overview
The project built on a study funded by the Foundation which comprised a national survey of provision for children with SSLD. This study was to show how LEAs and health trusts in England and Wales operate together as total systems to make a range of provision. Six case study pairs of LEAs/Trusts representing different models of practice were examined from classroom level to policy formulation and monitoring.
Data were collected from a range of professionals, especially teachers and speech and language therapists, and from parents. Information was largely collected relative to 90 children, from 3 key stages of education. This focused responses on ‘critical incidents’ as examples of good practice. The study identified important dimensions in different systems that support good practice, and provided exemplars which will aid others to develop their own practice.
