Setting a new research agenda

Since 1943, the research we have funded and the organisations we’ve supported have demonstrated the power of evidence to change lives for the better.

To mark our 80th anniversary, we’re launching the Changing lives for the better programme, a year-long series of events and activity exploring the significant issues that will define our work in the long term. We will bring together a diverse range of researchers, policymakers and practitioners to collectively shape the Foundation’s future strategic research priorities.

What to expect

The Changing lives for the better programme will combine our existing research interests in Education, Justice and Welfare, alongside emerging societal trends, risks and developments. Over the course of several events, we will consult with our stakeholders, funding community and the three pioneering research centres we established – the Ada Lovelace Institute, the Nuffield Council on Bioethics and the Nuffield Family Justice Observatory – to define the issues of tomorrow.

Throughout the year, we will publish online articles, papers and videos to share the outcomes of our discussions. The Changing lives for the better programme will culminate in spring next year, with a conference exploring core themes that sit at the heart of the Foundation’s agenda. To gather wider opinions on our research to inform decision-making ahead of our next strategy, we will also launch a stakeholder survey in the coming months.

The issues the programme will explore include:
