Ian Hanham appointed Director of Finance and Information Systems

By Nuffield Foundation

The Nuffield Foundation is pleased to announce the appointment of Ian Hanham as Director of Finance and Information Systems.

Ian will join the Foundation on 4 January and will lead our finance strategy, operations, and information systems.

Ian is currently Chief Operating Officer at the Workers’ Educational Association, where he has led an organisation-wide transformational change programme as well as overseeing the organisation’s support functions.

He has worked in senior finance and resource management roles in the not-for-profit sector since 2007, including for the British Red Cross and WaterAid. Prior to this, he spent sixteen years as a finance professional in the oil and gas industry.

Ian is the treasurer of Family for Every Child, a global alliance of local civil society organisations working together to improve the lives of vulnerable children around the world, and a board member (and former Chair) of ECPAT UK, a leading children’s rights organisation working to protect children from child trafficking and transnational child exploitation.

Ian will take over from our current Director of Finance, James Brooke Turner, who will continue as Investment Director on a part-time basis, alongside establishing a new business providing strategic financial advice to charities.

Nuffield Foundation Chief Executive Tim Gardam said:

“We are delighted that Ian is joining us as Director of Finance and Information Systems. Our new five-year strategy sets out an ambitious programme of work to advance social well-being in the UK, which will require a comprehensive review and upgrade of our information systems. Ian’s experience and reputation make him the ideal candidate to lead that project, and to manage the strategic development of the Foundation’s support functions.”

I am delighted to be joining the Nuffield Foundation at this exciting time. The new strategy demonstrates the Foundation’s ambition to build on and extend its exceptional heritage, and I look forward to playing my part in bringing that ambition to life.” Ian Hanham, Director of Finance and Information Systems

We improve people’s lives by funding research that informs social policy, primarily in Education, Welfare and Justice. We also fund student programmes that give young people skills and confidence in science and research.

We offer our grant-holders the freedom to frame questions and enable new thinking. Our research must stand up to rigorous academic scrutiny, but we understand that to be successful in effecting change, it also needs to be relevant to people’s experience.
