Research-based guidance and classroom activities for teachers of mathematics

Keeping the pizza hot

For this task, go to the Bowland Maths website and click on Classroom Projects - the Case Studies. Scroll down the list using the arrow at the bottom until you see a cast study called Keeping the pizza hot.

This task asks students to solve a practical problem, probably over several lessons, using a purposeful modelling cycle. It require them to set up relations between variables and use them to establish the effects of different design decisions. Students can experience the value of mathematical approaches in the realistic context of a cooling curve.

Other case studies on the Bowland site use simpler mathematics, also in purposeful modelling cycles, such as My Music, which uses mathematics to describe tempo.
