Are the inequalities seen today a sign of a broken system? Launch of the IFS Deaton Review of inequalities

Today the IFS formally launches the most comprehensive scientific analysis of inequalities yet attempted. In a review chaired by Nobel Laureate Professor Sir Angus Deaton and funded by the Nuffield Foundation, the IFS intend not just to describe inequalities – in income, wealth, health, social mobility, political participation and more – but to understand what causes them and to offer concrete policy proposals to tackle them.

The crisis cohort’s pay and career prospects have been scarred for up to a decade

The ‘crisis cohort’ who entered the world of work in the midst of the financial crisis continued to face higher unemployment, lower pay and worse job prospects up to a decade later, compared to other young people entering work before or after the downturn. This is according to a new Nuffield-funded report published today by the Resolution Foundation.

Sure Start had major health benefits for children in poorer neighbourhoods

One of Sure Start’s original aims was to improve the health of, especially, disadvantaged children. A new IFS study, funded by the Nuffield Foundation, is the first of its kind to follow children who had access to Sure Start right through to the end of primary school.

The IFS find that it did indeed have a big positive effect on children’s health, reducing hospitalisations. That positive effect was concentrated on children living in disadvantaged areas.

Asylum migrants earn 55% less per week than UK-born workers

Efforts to help refugees who have settled in the UK to integrate into British society have been constrained by the lack of information on the short- and long-term outcomes of refugees, a new report by the Centre on Migration, Policy and Society (COMPAS) at the University of Oxford, reveals today. The Nuffield-funded report identifies information on jobs and the labour market as particular gaps.

Parental choice of school is not the answer to social integration

Parental choice of school is associated with higher levels of segregation among school children from different socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds, according to a new Nuffield-funded report from researchers at the University of Bristol and Cardiff University.
