Improving Reading Attainment in Primary & Early Secondary

By Nuffield Foundation

The Nuffield Foundation funds several projects aimed at increasing reading attainment for pupils at primary and secondary school level. Individually they target different aspects of learning from identifying reading disorders to increasing reading motivation, vocabulary and comprehension. The seminar featured presentations from four projects funded by the Nuffield Foundation.

Presentations

Following the presentations we held a panel discussion for researchers, practitioners and policy makers to explore promising approaches to improving reading attainment, gaps in our knowledge and to examine how knowledge can be effectively translated into practice.

  • What are the most important issues to tackle in order to improve children’s reading attainment?
  • What else do we need to know about how to tackle these issues?
  • How can we best translate existing knowledge into workable approaches for practice?
  • What are the implications for education policy?

Thanks to our excellent panelists for their insights and contributions :

  • Jonathan Douglas (Chief Executive, National Literacy Trust)
  • Hydeh Fayaz (Assistant Head, St Matthews Research School, Birmingham)
  • Jessie Ricketts (Professor of Psychology, Royal Holloway)
