Scaling

Scaling is a theme within ratio and proportional reasoning. Links to relevant activities and resources are on the right hand side of this page.

Multiplication is often understood to be repeated addition, rather than scaling. Scaling is more useful when thinking about ratio and proportional reasoning. The metric system lets us use a zoom metaphor to decide the appropriate size of unit, so the understanding of ratio which is embedded in scaling lengths is easy to demonstrate. Scaling is also easy now to demonstrate using digital technology.
