Nuffield Foundation CEO Tim Gardam awarded CBE in New Years Honours List

By Nuffield Foundation

Tim Gardam, CEO of the Nuffield Foundation since 2016, has received a CBE for services to journalism and education.

I was as delighted as I was surprised to receive the award. I regard it, above all, as a tribute to the work of the researchers the Nuffield Foundation has funded over many years to advance our understanding of education, and the impact it can have on both individual lives and society as a whole. Tim Gardam, CEO

The central pillar of the Nuffield Foundation’s mission since it was established in 1943 has been to address disadvantage and advance educational opportunity and attainment. Under Tim’s leadership, the Foundation has doubled its spending on research and student programmes across its core domains of Education, Justice and Welfare. Nuffield’s Education portfolio represents over 40% of its grant funding and all the Foundation’s research seeks to use evidence to influence policy and practice to advance a just and inclusive society.

Tim previously set up the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at Oxford University and was Chair of the Content Standards Board as a director of Ofcom.

We improve people’s lives by funding research that informs social policy, primarily in Education, Welfare and Justice. We also fund student programmes that give young people skills and confidence in science and research.

We offer our grant-holders the freedom to frame questions and enable new thinking. Our research must stand up to rigorous academic scrutiny, but we understand that to be successful in effecting change, it also needs to be relevant to people’s experience.
