By Nuffield Foundation

Carly will take up a new role as the Australia’s first Privacy Commissioner.

The Nuffield Foundation extends its congratulations to Carly Kind, Director of the Ada Lovelace Institute, on her appointment to the role of Privacy Commissioner for the Australian government.

Carly joined Ada when it was first launched by the Foundation in 2019 and over the last four years, Carly has been crucial to Ada’s success in becoming an influential independent organisation shaping AI policy and practice.

Her new role is a great accolade for Ada and reflects its international reputation as a trusted authority on the impact of AI on people and society that it has built under Carly’s leadership.

Carly will be leaving Ada in February 2024. The recruitment of her successor is under way and Ada will continue to be in the safe hands of Fran Bennett, its interim director.

We improve people’s lives by funding research that informs social policy, primarily in Education, Welfare and Justice. We also fund student programmes that give young people skills and confidence in science and research.

We offer our grant-holders the freedom to frame questions and enable new thinking. Our research must stand up to rigorous academic scrutiny, but we understand that to be successful in effecting change, it also needs to be relevant to people’s experience.
