What projects did the placement students work on with you?

The students conducted research into topics relating to male sex work, particularly the prevalence and extent of sex work mediated through social media and the internet.

What did the Q-Step students gain?

From this research, the students gained an insight into personal stories and the complex causes underlying service users’ chaotic lives. They also gained an understanding of the working environment in a small, frontline charity that provides services to highly marginalised and difficult-to-engage young men.

What did your organisation gain?

As an organisation, we gained extremely valuable data used to inform operational strategic decision-making. The students also provided very useful additional capacity and, as a result, we gained many new and interesting insights.

What advice would you give to other employers thinking of hosting placement students?

The students provided us with professional expertise and brought curiosity and insight into their research.

What challenges, if any, did hosting a student present to you or your organisation?

We found that the main challenge for us was ensuring that we gave the students enough support in return for the amazing work they did for us.
