Mr Rhys Jones writes about the launch of the Level 3 Pilot Scheme in Social Analytics that took place at Cardiff University on 24 September 2014

The Launch of the level 3 pilot scheme in social analytics was a big success!  More than 50 students, parents and teachers attended the event, from local schools and colleges in the South Wales region.

The evening kicked off with Andrew Dodge briefly explaining what Social Analytics entails, introducing the main speakers of the event.

Mr Rhys Jones, project lead for the level 3 Social Analytics programme, and Lecturer in Quantitative methods FE, introduced the world of quantitative analysis, in a social context.  His talk gave the audience a taster of what the course will cover, as well as discussing many of the benefits to students who chose to engage with the course.  Benefits include; enhancing UCAS applications for HE study, advice and guidance from the admissions tutor at Cardiff School of Social Science and also improving student’s current attainment in their other level 3 qualifications.

Dr Luke Sloane, deputy director for the Cardiff Q step centre, and Senior Lecturer in Quantitative methods, discussed the HE opportunities students could take advantage of, after studying the level 3 Social Analytics programme.  He also discussed the valuable placement opportunities and employment skills students will gain, as part of the BSc Social Analytics degree that will launch in September 2015.

The event was facilitated by several post graduate students, and support staff from the Cardiff School of Social Sciences.  In particular, a big thank you to Dr Ian Jones, Jennifer Hampton, Charlotte Brookfield, Grace Seeney and Matthew Abraham, for all their help and support on the night.  In addition, Sue Diment was present as a representative from the community engagement team, who has been invaluable in terms of funding and promoting the event.  Catherine Camps, Lecturer of the Post graduate certificate in University Teaching and Learning course at Cardiff University, was also present to support and champion this exciting initiative.

Feedback from the event was overwhelmingly positive, with many students eager to fill in the application form for the level 3 pilot scheme in Social Analytics.  Student feedback of the event commented on the palpable enthusiasm of the lecturers for the courses being developed, which appears to be infectious!  The course will run in the week beginning 06/10/2014, with successful candidates being notified as soon as possible. Parents and teachers commended the courses content as being complimentary to many other subjects’ students will be currently studying in schools and college.  There was also a clear demand for similar courses to be available for teachers and parents, something of which the Cardiff Q step centre will explore in the near future.
