Who Has the Heaviest Backpacks?
This link takes you to a collection of tasks using Tinkerplots Dynamic Data Exploration on the Key Curriculum website. Who Has the Heaviest Backpacks? is the second task on the list. Students compare the weight of backpacks carried by young people of different ages and gender. They can either collect this data themselves or they could use the data already collected as the context for informal inferential reasoning. The activity offers the opportunity to represent the data in different ways and to find patterns. Students can also discuss whether the purpose is simply to decide who has the heaviest backpack (the descriptive game), or to draw conclusions relating to a wider population (the inferential game).
