Professor Dame Sally Macintyre appointed first Chair of the Governing Board of The Nuffield Council of Bioethics

By Nuffield Foundation

Professor Dame Sally Macintyre, FRSE FMedSci, has been appointed as the first Chair of the Governing Board of The Nuffield Council of Bioethics (NCoB).

The Nuffield Council on Bioethics was established 25 years ago and is now recognised globally as one of the most influential organisations in the field of bioethics. The Council is an independent, deliberative body with its own Chair that identifies, defines, and examines ethical questions raised by recent developments in biological and medical research that concern the public interest.

The funders of the Council – the Nuffield Foundation, the Medical Research Council and the Wellcome Trust – have established the Governing Board to take over the role of the governance of the Council and to review with the Council its work, remit and delivery. The funders are also recruiting a new Chair of the Council to succeed Professor Jonathan Montgomery whose term ends this year.

I am a great admirer of the work of the Nuffield Council on Bioethics, and I look forward to working closely with the new Chair of the Council once an appointment is made.” Professor Macintyre
The three funders are delighted that someone of Dame Sally’s reputation and experience has agreed to Chair the new Governing Board as we prepare for the next phase in the Nuffield Council on Bioethics’ development.” Tim Gardam, Chief Executive of the Nuffield Foundation

Dame Sally is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Glasgow, Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and of the Academy of Medical Sciences, and an Honorary Fellow of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. She is a member of the Human Tissue Authority and of the Ethics and Governance Council of UK Biobank, and has recently completed an eight year term as a member of the Medical Research Council. She was awarded a DBE for services to Science in 2011.

We improve people’s lives by funding research that informs social policy, primarily in Education, Welfare and Justice. We also fund student programmes that give young people skills and confidence in science and research.

We offer our grant-holders the freedom to frame questions and enable new thinking. Our research must stand up to rigorous academic scrutiny, but we understand that to be successful in effecting change, it also needs to be relevant to people’s experience.
