Description: Pupils start by exploring the patterns generated by moving counters between two stacks according to a fixed rule, doubling the size of the smaller stack. They are then asked to explore and describe the patterns arising from using different numbers of counters.

Suitability: Pupils working at all levels; individuals or groups.

Time: 2 hours

Equipment: Counters or multilink cubes, spreadsheet

Key mathematical language: cycle, repeat, sequence, reflection, predict, conjecture, proof
