Secondary education transitions

We are keen to improve understanding of the significance and impact of transitions into, through and out of secondary education.

We are interested in proposals addressing issues of policy and practice relating to progression and movement through institutions and phases; the role of schools in supporting these transitions; and the value that can be added by other educational and local agencies.

We are particularly interested in proposals that address one or more of the following issues:

  • The dip in achievement and motivation that takes place for many children in the move to secondary school and into Key Stage 3.
  • Subject and qualifications choices (and motivations for them) at 14 and 16, and their subsequent impact (for example on progression to higher education).
  • Understanding school-related and other factors leading young people to end up in the ‘NEET’ (Not in Education, Employment or Training) category, with subsequent encouragement of pilot interventions that might be developed and evaluated.
  • Information, advice and guidance and their role in supporting effective choices of subjects, educational pathways, and careers.
