Queen's University Belfast Q-Step Centre - Summer 2014 Work Placements
Queen's hosts one of the Q-Step Centres funded under Q-Step to develop new and exciting ways of teaching quantitative methods to undergraduate social scientists. Here, Dr Emma Calvert, Queen's Q-Step Centre Deputy Coordinator, explains how their new work placement programme will help to deliver this.
The Queen's Q-Step Centre has organised a total of 8 summer work placements with a range of employers, from the Northern Ireland Assembly to The Detail, an investigative journalism organisation. There was a competitive application process and the successful students will be drawing on their quantitative research training during the placements, from questionaire design to carrying out secondary data analysis using the software package Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS).
The placements are expected to last between 4 - 6 weeks, with the majority taking place over July and August. In preparation for the placements, the students attended a preparatory workshop run by the Careers, Employability and Skills team at Queen's.
