Nuffield Citizenship

The Nuffield Foundation citizenship teaching resources are available to members on the Association for Citizenship Teaching website [1].
About Nuffield Citizenship
Our Citizenship project developed a range of cross-curricular resources for KS3 and KS4. We worked with teachers to develop resources aimed at teaching Citizenship through other subjects: Business Studies, English, Geography, Maths, History, Languages, PE and Science.
We also developed standalone projects including 'Running a campaign' and (with the Nuffield Council on Bioethics) 'The use of animals in research'.
Book
In addition to the teaching resources, we developed a book for teachers and student teachers. Learning Citizenship: Practical teaching strategies for secondary schools [2] was written by Jenny Wales (Nuffield Citizenship Project Director at the Nuffield Foundation) and Paul Clarke from University College Worcester.
This book shows how a variety of teaching strategies can be used to teach citizenship skills across a range of curriculum subjects as well as in Citizenship lessons themselves. Topics covered include:
-
developing discussion
-
thinking through debate
-
addressing controversial issues
-
investigating citizenship
-
learning through role play
-
working in groups
-
learning with simulations
-
participation.
Impact report
In October 2009 the Nuffield Foundation held a seminar to explore the impact that Citizenship education has had on schools, communities and individuals. The seminar was chaired by Richard Garner, Education Editor of The Independent.
