Model-based inquiry is an approach to practical work based on the generating, testing and revising of scientific models.

Preparing to use these resources

Before using these teaching resources, have a look at the Introduction to model-based enquiry. This includes a quick start guide; a brief overview of what model-based inquiry is and what it means in practice, in the context of a practical lesson.

Exemplar resources
  • Osmosis (KS4) - Students make, use and evaluate a model for osmosis.
  • Colour vision (KS4/5) - Students use their own ideas to make a prediction about the outcomes of an experiment to test colour vision. They collect data and then use this to critique both their own model and the consensus model.
  • Combustion of iron wool (KS3) - Students make predictions based on their existing mental models. They compare their predictions with their observations, and then use the consensus model to develop an explanation.
  • Reaction kinetics (KS5) - Students evaluate models for explaining rates of reactions.
