Handling and moving hot apparatus

Refer to CLEAPSS Laboratory Handbook, sections 13.2.4, 9.8.4 and 9.8.5.

Hot apparatus should always be placed on a heat–resistant mat.

Tripods
These get quite hot and, ideally, should be allowed to cool down before moving. If it is necessary to move a hot tripod, always hold the bottom (cooler part) of one of the legs. Tripods should never be moved when they are still supporting a container. Always allow tripods to cool down before putting them away.

Gauzes
Ideally, allow to cool completely before handling. Crucible tongs can be used if it is essential to move a hot gauze.

Beakers
Beakers can be moved using beaker tongs (not ordinary tongs) or a ‘hot hand’ (this is a moulded silicone rubber hand protector). Also applies to conical flasks or a ‘hot hand’ (this is a moulded silicone rubber hand protector).

Test tubes
When heating solids or liquids in a test-tube (or boiling-tube), the test tube should be firmly held in a clamp or in a test–tube holder. Do not use crucible tongs. A wide variety of test tube tongs is available.

Crucibles
Use specially designed crucible tongs for moving crucibles - although, ideally, crucibles should be allowed to cool before moving. Do not use crucible tongs for test-tubes, beakers or flasks.
