Horizontal gene transfer

Transformation of bacteria by horizontal gene transfer is highly significant to the rate at which bacterial populations acquire resistance to antibiotics. It forces us to rethink models of evolution based on strictly vertical inheritance patterns.

Experiments

• Following gene transfer by conjugation in bacteria
  Mix two strains of bacteria with different genes giving antibiotic resistance, and encourage horizontal gene transfer. Identify antibiotic resistance of new population by culturing on selective media.
