Enzyme-catalysed reactions

It is important for students to remember that enzymes catalyse anabolic or synthetic reactions (building up complex molecules) as well as catabolic or digestive reactions (breaking molecules down into simpler components).

Experiments

• Making a calibration curve for starch concentration
  Make a calibration curve for starch using known concentrations of starch and a fixed volume of iodine solution.
• Enzyme-catalysed synthesis
  Use an extract from potatoes to catalyse the synthesis of starch and follow the course of the reaction with colorimetry.
