Oliver Bird Collaborative Centres
The Oliver Bird Collaborative Centres are based on multidisciplinary research teams working at the forefront of modern bioscience. Technologies deployed include genomics, imaging, proteomics, stem cell biology and nanotechnology.
Each of the collaborative centres offers a planned programme of training, including integrated courses and matching of students with individual PhD thesis projects. Students develop an appreciation of the clinical relevance of their research by working alongside both scientists and clinicians.
Please note that all studentships have now been filled.
Oliver Bird PhD studentships offer:
- a tax-free starting stipend of above £16,000 (over £18,000 in London) with annual increments
- UK/EU fees
- £8,000pa research expenses
- £1,000pa meeting and travel allowance
- an annual conference
- a supporting programme of visits, networking, opportunities to supervise undergraduates and
- additional skills training to enhance students’ development as professional scientists
- an alumnus network to maintain links with the Centres and current students.
During their training, students have published widely and presented their work in the UK and abroad; several have won prizes at international meetings.
Final year students have gained prestigious Fellowships and post-doctoral positions in research groups of international excellence, to further their careers.
Eligibility
To be eligible for an Oliver Bird Rheumatism Programme studentship, students should:
- have a first or good upper second class honours degree or its equivalent
- be EU nationals and fluent in English
- expect their research career to be predominantly in the UK.
