Nuffield Alumni Training Event 30/01/2017

Many thanks to all of our alumni who took part in the first Nuffield Alumni training event on 6 January at the Nuffield Foundation.

The training workshop, focusing on engaging with schools and colleges, was a pilot for Nuffield alumni and went down as a roaring success. Delivered by two public engagement experts, the participants developed new and useful skills through various activities and discussion.

When speaking to the students Tim Gardam, CEO of the Nuffield Foundation, emphasised the importance of student programmes:

“Our student programmes are fundamental to Nuffield’s purpose and identity. They fulfil two core aims: giving opportunities to students from disadvantaged backgrounds and building confidence and capacity in science and quantitative literacy.”

In 2016, we celebrated 20 Years of Nuffield Research Placements, which enable students to experience authentic research in a scientific environment. Since 1996 over 16,000 students have participated, and as part of the celebrations we wrote to as many of them as possible to offer them the opportunity to reconnect with the Foundation and to give back to younger students. The participants of the workshop came from across the country, from all walks of life and it was fantastic to hear what they’d been doing after their placements came to an end.

Following the workshop, we asked alumni who participated to visit three schools using the skills they have cultivated to encourage more students from disadvantaged backgrounds to take part in a Nuffield Research Placement.

Tim Gardam explained that: “The Nuffield Foundation would like to build an Alumni Network that connects past students to current ones, and to the schools we are trying to reach. We hope this might be a social and support network that gives valuable contacts and mentoring opportunities as students enter the world of work. I am deeply grateful to former Nuffield students who are prepared to be our ambassadors to the next generation."

We hope to offer more alumni the opportunity to particpate in similar training workshops in the future.

Nuffield Research Placements

Nuffield Research Placements give sixth formers and college students the opportunity to undertake research in science (including social science), technology, engineering and maths (STEM) workplaces across the UK.

These placements change lives. They give students - particularly those who do not have a family history of going to university or who attend schools in less well-off areas - the opportunity to gain first-hand experience of a professional research environment. This can be invaluable for making future education and career decisions, enabling our students to go on to become the scientific researchers of tomorrow.
