NRP Longitudinal Study

Overview of the Study

The Nuffield Foundation has commissioned Frontier Economics and CFE Research, two independent research organisations, to carry out a longitudinal study which will evaluate the impact of Nuffield Research Placements (NRPs).

The study will evaluate the impact on participating students’ education and career outcomes, focusing on pursuing further study and careers in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM). The research, led by Frontier Economics will also improve our understanding of the views and experiences of placement providers, schools and colleges, and students.

Findings will be used to inform the ongoing development of NRPs, including the support provided for placements, and implementation of future monitoring and evaluation.

The study will be complete in 2022 with interim reports available as the research progresses.

What this means for you

Researchers will be using administrative and survey data to examine the composition of participating students and assess the impact on educational and career outcomes, in comparison to students that do not do a placement. These strands of work will focus on tracking the destinations of students who participated in a placement in 2014, 2015 and 2016.

Students who applied to do a placement in 2016 cohort will be asked to participate in a series of surveys between September 2016 and Spring 2018 which will collect important information about their attitudes and choices as they make decisions about their future study.

Case studies will be carried out to understand how schools, colleges, placement providers and regional coordinators approach administering NRPs and the perceived impacts of participating on the different people and organisations involved. They will also provide a more in-depth picture of what students think about the placements.
