"I could never have imagined that doing a Nuffield placement could change my life in so many ways and bring me so many fantastic opportunities."

Lydia spent 2 months working on a laser photonics application project at a Laser Lab within the University of Salford in Summer 2005. After the allocated time period was up with the Nuffield scheme, she decided to carry on with her project for another year in the final year of sixth form.

She then heard about the BA CREST Awards in London, and entered her project into the competition, and went on to win 1st place out of all the projects in the country.

Her prize was an all expenses paid trip to Indianapolis, USA to compete at the Intel ISEF (International Science and Engineering Fair). She spent a week in America, competing against finalists from all over the world and had an amzing experience. She came home with a cash prize from the Patent and Tradesmark Office who recognised her project for outstanding creativity.

Shortly afterwards, Lydia was contacted by Teen Vogue, who wanted her to appear in an exhibition they were holding called Exceptional Youth. This featured people like Daniel Radcliffe, Theo Walcott, Lily Cole and many other amazing young people. Lydia got to attend the launch party at the National Portrait Gallery in London and the exhibition ran for 6 months.
