Jenny Best from Collyers College, Horsham spent 4 weeks at the Sea Life Centre in Brighton. Throughout her placement she worked alongside Joseph Pollard who is also studying at Collyers College. Her project was titled 'Behavioural traits of Green Turtle and Logger head turtle at Brighton Sea Life Centre'.

The aims of the project

The aim of the project was to observe two marine turtles at Brighton Sea Life Centre. Staff there wanted to know if turtles showed any significant behavioural traits and/or responded to a change in stall or tourist presence.

How the project was carried out
Observations took place between 10.00 -11.00, 11.00 – 12.00, 15.00 – 16.00 and 16.00 – 17.00. The turtles location was recorded in the tank and their behaviour every two minutes. I also recorded my location, staff location and tourist activity.

The conclusions reached at the end of the project
I found that Jersey, the Loggerhead turtle sleeps the majority of the day only really appearing when a talk is being held, or when staff and a larger number of tourists is present. However Lulu, the Green Turtle, spends most of her day swimming around. When it is feeding time she also knows where to be to get fed.

The most valuable thing about the bursary experience
I really enjoyed my placement and felt I gained a number of new skills. I would recommend a similar placement to anybody interested in animal/marine biology.
