Perspectives on ageing and financial planning for old age in South Asian Communities

Mon, 7 March 2005

On 1 March Dr Savita Katbamna (Nuffield Community Care Studies Unit, University of Leicester) launched a report of a study of perspectives on ageing and financial planning for old age in South Asian Communities.

The study was funded by the Nuffield Foundation and the launch was held at its offices in Bedford Square. Professor Gillian Parker (School of Sociology and Social Policy, University of Nottingham) welcomed the guests and there were contributions from Professor Chris Phillipson (Social Gerontology, Keele University) and Chris Curry (Research Director, Pensions Policy Institute).

The research, carried out between June 2002 and January 2004, set out to explore the meaning, expectations, attitudes and behaviour towards planning for care in old age of a middle-aged cohort of South Asians in three locations in the East Midlands. Bangladeshi and Gujarati men and women expressed a variety of opinions about what old age meant for them and what it was like to grow old in Britain.

Further information can be obtained from the NCSSU website, or they can be contacted at Nuffield Community Care Studies Unit, University of Leicester, 22-28 Princess Road West, Leicester LE1 6TP – telephone 0116 252 5422.
