How many years has Aberystwyth University offered placements to Nuffield Science Bursary students? 5 years or possibly longer.
How is the scheme run within the University?
Run as part of Widening Participation – we try to offer placements to those who would not be able to travel to a placement daily because of their rural Welsh location (by offering accommodation), and those who satisfy the other WAG criteria (e.g. living in a Community First area, Welsh first language students, BME students, etc.)
What do you feel the main benefits of the scheme are?
Enables students to get their teeth into a real research project and clarify some of their career aspirations. At Aberystwyth value is enhanced by the provision of accommodation, food and a full social programme (in conjunction with our other summer schemes for similarly aged young people).
Would you recommend the scheme to others?
Yes - students often go back to their school and make presentations to younger pupils – spreading the value of the scheme and the host institution. As individuals they gain a great deal, as a research group, hosts benefit from getting a discreet piece of work completed.
