The Gujarat earthquake: An ethnography of reconstruction in western India

Dr Edward Simpson and Professor Stuart Corbridge
Department of Anthropology, London School of Economics
£118,306 over 3 years

Dr Simpson and Professor Corbridge will examine the consequences of the 2001 earthquake in Gujurat for the distribution and use of urban space in Bhuj. Their aim is to understand the dynamics of power involved in the reconstruction through an ethnographic account, which will explore and describe the interplay of social, religious, political and external factors. The analysis will also involve mapping the reconstruction using quantitative methods in geography and statistical data analysis. Dr Simpson will build on his existing regional, linguistic and ethnographic expertise, acquire knowledge about urban and development policy, and training in specific research methods and analytical skills including Geographic Information Systems.
