Dr Wilson and Professor Sillitoe are researching the interaction between mining companies, local communities and national governments in Melanesian states where there are increasing problems of poverty and environmental degradation. Their research will focus on the relationship between hierarchical Western corporate structures and fluid egalitarian local communities. The research aims, through ethnographic reseach, to improve local negotiation in and benefits from resource development projects. Dr Wilson’s expertise is in geology, social geography and law. The Fellowship will develop his skills in social science data collection and applied anthropology.
