Seminars on the civil justice system in Scotland
Tue, 8 March 2005
The Scottish Consumer Council is currently running a series of seminars for invited stakeholders on the civil justice system in Scotland, funded by the Nuffield Foundation. The Right Honourable Lord Coulsfield chairs the advisory group which is overseeing the project.
The purpose of the seminars, which have been running since September 2004 and will continue until April 2005, is to carry out a critical examination of the civil justice system and ‘to encourage proposals, including radical proposals, for change and development’. The series of six seminars, focusing on speakers from other jurisdictions, is intended to mirror a user’s journey through the civil justice system, from seeking advice on their dispute, through the dispute resolution system, to the enforcement stage.
Stakeholders are also being invited to submit written views on whether and to what extent there is a need for reform of the current system, and if so, what the priorities for change should be. The SCC hopes that the seminar series, which has the support of the Scottish Executive, will help to establish what agreement there may be about the nature and direction of future reforms to the system. Following the seminars there will be a report from the project advisory group with recommendations on the best way forward for Scotland.
