Innovation starts in education
Fri, 14 March 2008
The government’s Innovation Nation White Paper says that the key to the UK becoming a world leader in innovation is to forge closer links between industry and higher education. In welcoming the White Paper, the Association for Science Education’s Alan Rhodes referred to and praised the Nuffield Foundation’s innovative approach in forging partnerships between education and industry.
Nuffield’s science bursary schemes help fund summer vacation research placements for A-level students and undergraduates. Many of the companies taking part, including QinetiQ, GlaxoSmithKline and Cancer Research UK, have gone on to offer students a full-time job after completing their course.
