Grandparenting in Divorced Families

Thu, 22 January 2004

The book Grandparenting in Divorced Families by Neil Ferguson with Gillian Douglas, Nigel Lowe, Mervyn Murch and Margaret Robinson was published recently by The Policy Press. The book is the most recent product of a study funded by the Nuffield Foundation.

In 1999 the Nuffield Foundation gave a grant to Professor Gillian Douglas, of Cardiff Law School, for a study of the role of grandparents in divorced families. The most recent product of this study is a book, published by The Policy Press, Grandparenting in Divorced Families by Neil Ferguson with Gillian Douglas, Nigel Lowe, Mervyn Murch (all of Cardiff Law School) and Margaret Robinson (Cardiff Family Studies Research Centre).

It is the first in-depth exploration of grandparents’ relationships with their adult children and grandchildren in divorced families. It asks what part grandparents might play in public policy and whether measures should be taken to support their grandparenting role. Do grandparents have a special role in family life that ought to be recognised in law?

The study asks challenging questions about grandparents’ contributions to family life and comments on the legal and policy implications.

Information about the research can be obtained from Professor Gillian Douglas, Cardiff Law School, PO Box 427, Law Building, Museum Avenue, Cardiff CF1 1XJ; telephone: 029 2087 6705.
