Biographies of ENEF Award-holders

Dr Annett Klinder, Ojevwe Owereh, Verena Cornwall, Fiona Akpeki and Rowan Roenisch at ENEF's 50th birthday partyENEF is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2006. Over the years the Fund has helped a significant number of women to improve their employment prospects. To mark this important date, ENEF has been in touch with a number of former award-holders who have some fascinating tales to tell. We hope you enjoy reading their success stories as much as we did!
Fiona Akpeki, sexual health worker
Fiona Akpeki received an ENEF award in 2002. Having graduated from King's College London with a BSc in Nursing, she now works as a Sexual and Reproductive Health nurse.
Carol Andrews, Egyptologist
Carol Andrews studied Classics in the 1960s with the help of an ENEF grant, and has gone on to become an internationally renowned Egyptologist.
Angela Brinkworth, professional theatre worker
In 1995 ENEF helped Angela Brinkworth to fund a postgraduate diploma in drama therapy at the University of Hertfordshire. She has since worked with internationally renowned theatre and therapy practitioners.
Verena Cornwall, specialist in circus, street theatre and carnival
ENEF helped Verena Cornwall with her childcare costs; she now runs her own management consultancy agency and sits on a number of key panels and Boards.
Nahida Farhood, re-qualifying as a doctor
Dr Farhood received an award in 2005 through ENEF's annual grant to RETAS, a programme supporting women refugees to obtain a professional re-qualification.
Sara Jolly, senior lecturer in media production
Sara Jolly, recipient of an ENEF award to study at the National Film and Television School in the 1980s, is the winner of an Emmy for Best Historical Documentary.
Dr Annett Klinder, Daphne Jackson Fellow
Returning to research work after a career break, Annett was awarded a Daphne Jackson Fellowship, sponsored by ENEF, in February 2006. She is researching the links between colon cancer and probiotics and prebiotics.
Syreeta Kumar, actor
Syreeta Kumar attended the Old Vic Theatre School in Bristol with the help of an ENEF award in 1996.
Mary Macintosh, consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist
Mary Macintosh received support from ENEF in 1974 when, after initially studying mathematics at Cambridge, she decided to train as a doctor. She is currently Director of the National Chlamydia Screening Programme.
Bernice Martin, former Chair of the Elizabeth Nuffield Educational Fund
Bernice Martin BA, ARCM, Emeritus Reader in Sociology in the University of London, received an award from the Elizabeth Nuffield Educational Fund in 1959-60, and went on to become an ENEF Committee member (1982-2000) and Chair of the Fund (1998-2000).
Jewels Orton, studying law
Jewels Orton is to commence training as a barrister at the BPP Law School, Leeds in September 2006. She received an award from ENEF in 1995.
Rowan Roenisch, art and architectural historian
Rowan graduated as an art historian in 1973, helped by financial support from ENEF. After her studies at the Courtauld Institute, she went on to become a principal lecturer at De Montfort University.
Caroline Southgate, chartered phsyiotherapist
Caroline Southgate graduated from the University of East London in 1997, receiving Student of the Year award. She now runs her own private practice.
Julie Umerle, artist
Julie Umerle graduated with a first class honours degree in painting from Falmouth College of Art with help from ENEF. She has since acquired an MA and received prestigious awards for her art.
Penny Wright, resource operations manager
Penny Wright graduated from the University of Brighton in 2000 with a degree in Humanities. She is now Resource Operations Manager (CRM) for EDF Energy.
