Cross border crime and defence rights
Fri, 21 July 2006
In 2003, the Foundation made a grant to Justice to convene a series of workshops and carry out research on the operation of the European Arrest Warrant. While Justice broadly welcomed the initiative, there were concerns that insufficient attention had been given to the details of implementation of the warrant.
Over time, Justice has now become part of a European network – whose creation it largely stimulated – of academics, NGOs and policy makers and police forces to meet and discuss these issues in a constructive way, which itself adds to civic capacity across Europe.
This spring saw the publication by Justice for this network of an edited volume to discuss some of the practical improvements that have been made, and to highlight areas where particular issues or aspects of implementation in particular countries need further work. This volume, Cross Border Crime: Defence rights in a new era of international judicial co-operation, sets a useful agenda for areas where detailed planning, and in some cases public discussion, is needed if cross-border co-operation is to work efficiently and with public support.
