Elizabeth Nuffield Educational Fund
A guide to support for adult learners caring for disabled children or other family members
Mon, 4 July 2005
This new Guide covers the full range of education and training options, and sources of support, for adult learners who are also family carers.

The Guide has a full reference section detailing key contacts and organisations providing further information and support. This first edition of the Guide covers funding arrangements in England; it is envisaged that future editions will be expanded to cover the rest of the UK.
The Guide aims to help family carers to:
- find courses that are suitable for their needs, fitting in with their life and caring responsibilities, whether in higher or further education, or simply learning for pleasure;
- unlock the different sources of funding that can help pay for childcare or family support whilst studying, including benefits and allowances, tax credits, student funding and other funding options;
- arrange childcare or family support that is safe, convenient and enjoyable for the family; the merits of various care options for both children and adult dependants are discussed.
An additional section gives advice on the law so readers can learn about other services they are entitled to as adult learners and family carers.
You can download a copy of the Guide here.
The Guide was commissioned by the Elizabeth Nuffield Educational Fund (ENEF) and was written by Philippa Russell, Disability Rights Commissioner. It has been produced with the help of a number of partner organisations: the National Union of Students, Contact a Family, the National Children’s Bureau and Carers UK.
