Building African-led research capacity
The Commission for Africa highlighted the importance of strengthening Africa’s science capacity, recommending that donors develop incentives for research and development in health that meet Africa’s needs, and increase funding to African-led research.
Nuffield’s Commonwealth Programme is funding a number of initiatives that respond to this call. Two of them build on scientific collaboration between the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and institutions in Africa. The first, a partnership with the South African Cochrane Centre, is increasing the numbers of people from sub-Saharan Africa participating in the Cochrane Collaboration. The second, working with the College of Medicine at the University of Malawi, is training African respiratory health professionals in research methods.
More recently Nuffield has become part of a funding collaboration of European foundations that are jointly launching a programme to develop African research capacity in neglected communicable diseases.
