Overview
The Nuffield Commonwealth Programme supports initiatives to bring about long-term improvements in health, education and civil justice in Eastern and Southern Africa and to foster North-South partnerships.

The Nuffield Commonwealth Programme is unusual amongst sources of funding of overseas work. Firstly it directly supports the development of service delivery and secondly it actively seeks partnerships between UK-based and southern organisations, where the UK-based partner is providing more than money, monitoring and moral support. It focuses on projects that improve services through development of the expertise and experience of practitioners and policy makers, and where active involvement from the UK-based organisation will increase the initiative’s effectiveness.
Change is at the heart of each project supported under the programme – at individual, community, organisational and societal level. Recognising that achieving lasting change takes a long time, the programme supports only a small number of projects, but over an extended period, usually five years.
The programme has made grants every two years for the past eight years. The scheme is now under review and no further rounds have yet been announced
