Newly Appointed Lecturers in Science, Engineering and Mathematics
This scheme is now closed and no further applications will be accepted.
Trustees recently completed a five-year review of our three science schemes. They concluded that the Schools and Colleges and the Undergraduate Research Bursaries schemes offered ‘life-changing’ career opportunities and that both schemes should be significantly expanded. To achieve this they have decided to close the New Lecturer scheme and reallocate its resources to the Bursary schemes.
The review found solid support for the New Lecturer scheme and that it had benefited many young academics for over 25 years since its origin in the ‘New Blood’ Lecturers era. The sums currently offered were relatively small however, and Research Councils and the Royal Society now offered more generous support for young academics. Young academics undoubtedly need flexible funding from the start of their lectureships and many are hampered by a lack of immediate support. However the Trustees have decided to focus the Foundation's efforts on those at the very earliest stage of a science career and therefore they felt that the resources currently devoted to the New Lecturer scheme could make a more significant contribution to the careers of young scientists if reallocated to the school and undergraduate bursary schemes.
