Congratulations to all the Nuffield students who competed at this year’s Big Bang Fair for UK Young Scientists and Engineers. The Fair took place at the QEII Conference Centre in Westminster, London, with over 200 students aged 11-19 manning stands to exhibit their science, technology, engineering and mathematics projects.

Among the Nuffield winners was Sam Bedford from Halesowen College, who won the Royal Society International Expedition Prize for his project on skeletal muscle stem cells at the University of Birmingham, whilst Helen Beaumont from Ashlyns School in Hertfordshire was awarded the Nuffield Foundation Stockholm International Youth Science Seminar Prize for her astrophysics project on brown dwarfs at the University of Hertfordshire. The Stockholm International Seminars are open to a very select invited group of young scientists, which Helen is now part of. Helen will be going to Stockholm to attend this prestigious event featuring talks from Nobel Prize winners and visits to world renowned research institutions.

Many other students who carried out a Nuffield bursary project in 2008 were also successful, including Rosy Halfyard from The Cavendish School, and Owen McMeel from St Mary’s Grammar, who were both awarded the Intel ISEF prize to attend the Intel ISEF event in the USA – the world’s largest pre-university science competition.

A number of other Nuffield students were also successful at the Fair, so congratulations once again to all who took part. For a full list of winners, please click here.
