"My Nuffield bursary opened up so many opportunities to me and allowed me to meet a huge range of fantastic people."

July-August 2003
While at Sacred Heart Grammar School, Newry, Mary was awarded a Nuffield Bursary to research a project on “Processing of prawn shell waste” in Queen's University Belfast Chemical Engineering Department.

February 2004
As a result of her bursary placement Mary attended the BA CREST Science Fair in London and jointly won the Intel ISEF Prize.

May 2004
Mary attended the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Portland, Oregon USA.

June 2004
Mary was invited to take part in The Seagate Young Innovators Competition in the Odyssey, Belfast and won the Royal Society of Chemistry Award.

Also, Mary's bursary introduced her to the BA, where she was given the opportunity to attend and help out with the BA Festival of Science 2004 in Exeter and 2005 in Dublin and to return to the Science Fair in London in 2006.
