Pavan Shah's bursary placement
Pavan Shah from Monks Walk School, Welwyn Garden City took a four week bursary placement in the Environmental Sciences Department at the University of Hertfordshire. His project was called An investigation to assess heavy metal content in evasive Louisianan crayfish, native freshwater crabs and the effect they have to the Cape Clawless Otter populations in Kenya.
During the time on his bursary placement, Pavan worked alongside Alex Cowan who is a student from The Priory School in Hitchin.
The aims of the project
To assess heavy metal content in evasive Louisianan crayfish and fresh water crabs in Kenya and to provide possible solutions to the depleting clawless otter population due to increasing numbers of crayfish.
How the project was carried out
Pavan has written a diary about the time he spent on his bursary placement. To read his diary, click here.
The most valuable thing about the bursary experience
What I found most valuable about my experience is the possibility of knowing that the work I have done is benefitting the local community in Africa. Furthermore, I have learnt and extended my knowledge on certain skills which will be useful to an employer such time management, team working and good communication skills.
