If you’re a teacher you can get behind our scheme, inspire students to consider higher education and careers in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) and develop contacts with working scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians in industry and research institutions.

Students benefit from working in industry and research institutions, gain an insight into current research and development, and get first-hand experience of STEM in a working environment.

How to find our more about the scheme

You should contact your local Nuffield Coordinator who will provide you with more information about how your students can get involved.

What are the projects like?

One of last year's Nuffield bursary students, Lisa Howell, has made a series of short films about her bursary project. These give an idea of the depth and complexity of the projects that students work on, and also an example of how a project could be structured. You may find it helpful to show these brief clips to students who might be interested in doing a project, so that they have an idea of the form their project might take. Click here to see the films.

By encouraging your students to take part in the scheme you can:

• Develop contacts with working scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians in industry and research institutions

• Improve links with Higher Education in your area

• Raise the profile of your School/College within the local community

• Inspire students to consider higher education and careers in science, technology, engineering and maths.

Quotes from teachers whose students participated in the scheme during the summer of 2008

Our college has been participating in the scheme for five years to provide an extra challenge and opportunity for our gifted, talented and motivated students. The bursary placements allow students their independence and the chance to delve into research fields that are both novel and pioneering.
Dr Adam Shaw, Halesowen College

An excellent scheme for the students who get the opportunity. All have agreed that it has been a worthwhile experience and intend to use it to enhance their UCAS applications.
Margaret Lane, Head of Department, Abbey Grammar School

Every pupil who has taken part in the scheme has benefited from increased confidence and general experience. It has usually improved motivation during their final year at school and they have all achieved admission to their prefered University courses.
Lynn Friedrichsen, Principal Teacher Faculty, Dumfries Academy

Our students benefit from this experience tremendously, especially as many of them are identified as coming from areas of social deprivation.
