Dr Jane Nolan and Professor Malcolm Warner
Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, University of Cambridge
£149,938 over three years
Dr Jane Nolan and Professor Malcolm Warner will examine comparatively how foreign and local experts in the financial sector use social networks. The study will integrate theories from economic sociology, international migration and social network studies. It will combine qualitative data on perceptions of networks, and their importance, with a quantitative analysis of the network structures. Dr Nolan’s background is in sociology and psychology, with research experience in the interaction between employment and family networks and their impact on quality of life in the UK. The Fellowship will add a new geographical area to her research, and knowledge about theoretical and empirical developments in international migration, social networking, and expatriate labour studies. She will develop her Mandarin Chinese, and train in qualitative computer-assisted data analysis and quantitative network analysis.
