Dr Stephan Collishaw and Professor Andrew Pickles
Social, Genetic and Developmental Psychiatry Centre, Institute of Psychiatry, King's College London
£149,323 over 2 1/2 years
Dr Stephan Collishaw and Professor Andrew Pickles will build on a Nuffield funded research project which found a marked deterioration in adolescent mental health in the UK over the past 25 years. This study will test a number of hypotheses of the causes of this trend, focussing on parenting and peer relationships, education and vocational expectations, social activities, influences and attitudes. To do so they will collect data in 2006 from a nationally representative sample of 1,000 16-year olds for comparison with identical data collected in 1986. Dr Collishaw will develop capacity in the complex methodological and conceptual issues involved in designing and analysing a large scale study of this kind and build links with international researchers in the field.
