Using the contact hypothesis, Mr Charis Psaltis and Professor Miles Hewstone will investigate the effect of direct and indirect contact between Greek and Turkish Cypriots in Cyprus in breaking down prejudice and developing trust. Friendships and social relations will be studied with a representative sample of the whole population and within a mixed village and two schools with ethnically mixed populations. The study will draw on the experience of similar studies in Northern Ireland. Mr Psaltis has expertise in education and psychology. He will learn a range of research methods, including advanced statistical techniques, for analyzing large quantitative data sets, and about inter-group conflict in Northern Ireland.
