Dr Courtenay Frazier Norbury and Dr Kate Nation will consider the relationship between language, communication skills and social well-being to identify children at risk of social exclusion. Ms Norbury has research experience with children with severe language and communication disorders and will apply this knowledge and experience across the spectrum of ability seen in mainstream educational settings. Through the Fellowship she will learn to use eye-tracking technology to assess children’s language and social understanding in real time. A second strand of the research includes a longitudinal study aimed at identifying predictors of social well-being in young children. By combining these methodologies, Ms. Norbury and Dr. Nation will gain a better understanding of who is at risk of social exclusion, when and why social understanding breaks down, and how factors relating to social well-being change over time.
