Dr Mercedes Hinton and Professor Tim Newburn will explore the impact of new migratory waves from countries with weak legal, social, and economic structures on police governance and practice in London, New York, and Paris, assessing the implications for the quality of social and political life. For this comparative study, the team will apply quantitative and qualitative methods, including document analysis and a broad range of in-depth interviews. A Latin Americanist, Dr Hinton is knowledgeable about policing in regions where issues of disenfranchisement and police legitimacy are highly contentious. Through this project, she expects to develop specialist knowledge in a broader international context, with a view to assessing whether policies being implemented in the three cities under study offer applicable lessons for each other, and for democratic policing in developing countries.
