£119,329 over three years

Dr Manuela Ciotti and Professor Patricia Jeffery will study the political participation of Dalit (ex-Untouchable) women in grassroots democracy in Uttar Pradesh in north India. Their study comprises three linked phases of ethnographic research with a focus on the empowerment avenues and strategies used by women with no prior socio-economic capital and how these can be further enhanced. Dr Ciotti is a sociologist and social anthropologist. She will develop new social science research skills and theoretical and policy related understanding of gender in social analysis.
