Dr Marco Manacorda and Professor Timothy Besley
Suntory Toyota International Centre for Economics and Related Disciplines, London School of Economics
£120,822 over 2 ½ years
Dr Macacorda and Professor Besley will examine the causes and consequences of child labour using micro data from developed and transition economies (India, South Africa, and Russia) as well as historical micro data from developing countries (the United States). They will explore the consequences of child labour for children's current and future outcomes, including human capital, health and earnings. They will also investigate the effect of child labour on other family members - on parents' employment and on siblings' employment, education, and health. Finally, they will consider how intra-household income distribution affects child labour. Dr Manacorda has expertise in micro-econometrics applied to the analysis of labour markets in developed countries. The Fellowship will allow him to develop knowledge about the economics of child labour and labour markets in developing countries.
